i have xp and i am trying to completly reinstall windows xp with my xp disk, when it says starting windows i get error- STOP: C0000221 – /systemroot/system32/ntdll.dll. i was wondering if i can use killdisk(i have it copied to a disk already) and install windows xp or will it come up with this error again? The other day I started up my computer and as I was about to run a program, internet explorer, my screen turned blue and showed a bunch of codes. It also recommended that I press F8 to go to advanced troubleshoot setting, so I did. I have Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, by the way. I accessed the troubleshoot menu, and I tried each Safe Mode. At times I could proceed to choosing an account to log in with, but at other times the screen would go blue. I found my Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 cd, and attempted to repair it. It would get stuck through the repairs and would return to the blue screen, but with this time a different code than the rest. The code is 'c0000221 Unknown Hard Error', and it shows up now each time I am brought to a blue screen. I'm assuming it is an issue with the hardware. I called Microsoft and they told me it was my router. I unplugged the router completely, and the computer continues to return to the blue screen. What is a solution to this issue so I can use my computer again? I will appreciate it if you have a solution.

One of the biggest complaints about Microsoft's Visa seems to be the prevalence of fatal driver errors resulting in the “Blue Screen of Death'. These STOP Errors, as Microsoft calls them, are irrecoverable and grind the computer to a halt. The errors are almost always caused by a driver conflict or hardware incompatibility (even in a few that have passed testing, apparently) and normally takes this format: 0×000000??, where the two ??' are the two most relevant digits. For example: 0x0000008E is an error caused by faulty memory or an attempt to write to nonexistent memory, even in the Windows paging file. Generally replacing faulty RAM or updating to the latest hardware drivers can remedy this situation, but not always.
The top 3 causes of Blue Screen errors in Vista
Faulty RAM – For whatever reason (maybe because it uses more than any other OS), Windows Vista is very sensitive to bad RAM sticks. A small bad patch that Linux or XP would run (seemingly) fine with will cause Vista to bomb to a STOP error fairly quickly. A couple of quick ways to check this include swapping out a stick of memory with another one or running memtest86 for a few hours. If you don't have a spare RAM stick but have two sticks installed, you can try just removing one and seeing if the error pops up again. It's fairly easy, however, to boot from your Vista install disk and run the memory checker. If that's not an option you can burn an Ubuntu livecd and choose memtest86 from the menu.
Video cards/drivers – Probably the number one cause of the blue screen, either the drivers aren't compatible, they're poorly written, or the hardware itself isn't Vista compatible. Upgrading to the latest drivers can sometimes remedy this (on the other hand, it's been known to cause it too) but the best bet is a completely different video card. You've probably wanted one that supports the new DirectX 10, anyway.
Virtual CD drives – VirtualCloneCD and several others can cause this on some systems. No specific on it, but reading the various crash dumps has pointed to it a rather large number of times. Same goes for a lot of older CD/DVD burning software. There's a good number of resources on the web to help you troubleshoot these 'blue screens of death' if you should run into them and the cause is difficult to track down. Hopefully, as hardware support in Vista improves and older hardware is phased out, these will no longer be nearly as common.

Mark,
Very sad to learn of your computer issues. I can certainly relate a bit as my notebook was stolen from my vehicle last week in Tacoma along with my back-up drive which I foolishly left in my vehicle as well. I suppose that this is just about as bad as a crash. Discombobulating to say the least and an unnecessary expense in time and money.
Wish you well in getting up and going again.
Sounds like a song but it sure isn't sweet music.
More correctly, I suppose I should say Windows Vista crash blues. Yesterday for no reason I can figure my computer went to sleep and didn't wake up. Many efforts and scary screens with uncomfortable messages later, I gave up and called Tech Support. And yes, for the fee of $100 plus tax, the young man would be glad to assist me. I am now the proud owner of the questionably valuable HP tech support for one year.
I will say that this tech seemed to care about not losing my files. We weren't successful in that goal, and I thank my stars that I had most photos and important documents on an external hard drive as backup. At work, I save everything to a thumb drive so I can take it with me as needed. At home, I'm not so careful but do try to back up to the external drive every month and more often if I remember. So I lost a few things but it was not the disaster it could have been. The biggest loss was Microsoft Word, and I ordered the new Word 7 anyway so that's not a big problem either.
The worst headache was this: since my computer was restored to its new-out-of-the-box state, there were many updates that needed to be installed. The HP tech promised to call me this morning so we could install only the necessary updates. He didn't call and I had a doctor's appointment in the afternoon, so I called Tech Support again. Got a different guy and we had a serious language-understanding-compatibility issue. I don't speak his language and he sure didn't speak West Virginian.
After a frustrating hour, he said I did not have to install ANY of the updates. Now every one was listed as a “security update” to prevent someone from doing something bad to my computer. I didn't need them? I was pretty sure I did! I figured some newer ones pre-empted earlier updates and that was what I needed to know. I got nowhere with the tech, so tonight on my own I uploaded the damn things. Enough to make a granny cuss, but it's done and I hope I didn't mess anything up.
Oddly, even with the crash, my internet still works. I'm not sure why that is so, and will call my satellite company tomorrow to be sure everything is okay–I mean, the guy told me I would lose all software installed after I bought the computer, so I'm not sure just how this satellite thingie works. I have a CD so I assume it operates by software?
Then there's the printer to re-install. And when the Word CDs arrive, I'll have to get that installed. After that, I should be back to somewhere near normal.
You know, never in my life did I want to learn computer stuff. But if I don't do it I'm stuck, so learn and fumble I do. I tell myself this will prevent me from getting Alzheimer's. Reckon it's true? There has to be some reward for such aggravation!

Hi There,
Today’s post is all about how I had to really use most of the Happy Living Tips from this blog to stay happy in spite of circumstances! It also explains why I was unable to add any new post in the past 3 weeks.
The past three weeks have been really ‘eventful’ – not necessarily in the best possible way! Here’s a little breakdown of all the little ‘challenges’ (better word than ‘problems’) that came up – in no chronological order:
In addition there was some bereavement issues to deal with:
So how and what exactly did I do to keep my Daily Happy Living principles intact?
First the bereavement issues:
Untimely Death: I can only imagine how devastated my friends would be at the loss of their son at such an early age. So now their family of four is down to just three – one daughter. But I admire how they cope with their loss!
When I arrived at the church in Kuala Lumpur for the funeral, I was surprised to see an unexpectedly large number of cars parked in the compound. I went to the main building and a wedding was in progress! I asked about the boy’s funeral and I was told that it would be held at a small chapel at the back. Talk about ‘how life does go on!’ A wedding in front, a funeral at the back!
I went to the chapel and I was impressed that my friends had put up a large ‘happy’ montage of photos on a wall. This showed all the good times they had with their son – the picnics, the holidays, the brother-sister relationships, places they had visited as a family etc. Unlike most funerals where they would just be mourning, here they wanted to celebrate their son’s life – for the joy he had given them in his short span of 15 years on earth.
I paid my condolences to the Father and the Daughter who were present. I asked about the Mother, thinking that she must have been too distraught to be there to receive the visitors, but was told that she was busy writing the eulogy for the ceremony! Imagine that! But this couple have always been special – from the time I met them about 7 years ago as my sponsors in a nutrition company, they have always showed a rare kind of steadfastness and strength.
This steadfastness showed when their son was first diagnosed with a brain tumor about 6 years ago. They still went about their work enthusiastically while giving the boy wonderful care! This care ensured that their son only spent brief spells in the hospital for the therapy but most of the time he was out running around and playing as any normal boy. He grew up to be a strapping 6-footer and no one would have believed that he had cancer. So he was actively involved in living and not moping! Even in the end the boy passed away in his sleep at home – not in hospital!
What touched me most about this wonderful couple’s attitude, was that even in spite of this huge bereavement, they still remembered to send me an sms greeting for my birthday on February 15, as they had done every year – except that this year there were only 3 names at the end of the message instead of the usual 4!
My friends are the best proof that Daily Happy Living can be a reality – no matter what the external circumstances.
My Brother-in -law: I was informed by my niece that her father had been admitted to a hospital in KL on Thursday February 11, for an endoscopy to be performed the next morning. My brother-in-law was in his late seventies and had been going in and out of hospitals for the past few years, so it was not unexpected.
But somehow I felt that I had to make a trip to visit him that day itself. I chose to go at night – to avoid the notorious KL traffic. He was delighted to see my wife and me, since my niece (his only child) had told him not to expect visitors during a workday. We had a good chat and left.
The next morning when I called to ask about the endoscopy, I was told that they could not perform the examination because he had taken a turn for the worst in the morning. He was comatose and placed on a ventilator. He never recovered consciousness and passed away on Valentine’s Day!
When people pass away at a ripe old age having lived a full life, it does not feel so tragic – it may even be a relief for the person, an end to physical suffering. To me, since I think of life as a school or place of learning, where we spend some time to learn and experiment and enjoy, I consider death to be just a promotion to college or an university or the next level of our evolution.
So death does not frighten me because I believe that the Supreme Power that gifted us with this life on this wonderful planet is Benevolent, and can only have something even more exciting for us to experience in the next phase of our growth!
Computer Crash: The first thing I did when my computer crashed on Friday 12 February was to decide to keep a happy disposition. I said to myself “I guess I really need a vacation from the internet and the hours of surfing and the struggling with internet marketing!” “Also now I have time to visit my relative in hospital.” “This would be a good time to re-evaluate my blogging goals and my internet marketing goals, and make detailed plans of action!”
Such thoughts kept me in a good frame of mind and so I ventured to call my regular computer man – even though he was Chinese and so may not be working. To my surprise he was in (it seems his father had passed away several months ago and so they were not celebrating CNY). So I took the laptop in for him to check and repair on Saturday 13 February.
Now an interesting twist – since my birthday was just 2 days away and my sons had decided to get me a good wristwatch for me, I told them I would rather prefer my laptop repaired and got a new printer instead. They were feeling generous and said that instead of repairing the old laptop, they would buy me a new one as a birthday present instead.
When I checked with my computer guy a few days later, and told him what my sons had said, I was told that he had been able to repair all the problems and there was no need to buy a new one!
Anyhow the end result of that computer ‘challenge’ is that I now have a new printer and a repaired laptop that works faster. Turned out to be a win-win-win situation! My sons win because they only had to spend 50% of their original budget, my computer man wins because I bought a printer from him! And of course I win too. I really believe that when we practice being happy by choice, things turn up to make us happier still!
This post is getting too long. To be continued soon.
Cheers! Expect Happiness!
